So this is a note to let you know bout this week at the Mo’ Ho’.

Thursday March 27th
$5 21+
9pm Red Sails
10pm Face of Cain
11pm Bad Suit
I met Face of Cain when they did an opening bid for a Powder Kegs show back in Oct. Don’t let that fool you, they are are rocking trio that falls somewhere between the Radiohead and Blind Melon schools of thought. Really great musicianship and catchy tunes. My favorite part of the band is the strong vocal harmonies and the unorthodox way the vocal lines often chant their way through the chord changes. Anyway, they will be playing the middle spot, and are bringing their friends Red Sails along. I haven’t actually heard them, but I trust the guys and their taste in music.
Now Bad Suit is pretty bad ass. I haven’t seen the band personally in what seems like a year, but I’m excited that they are playing. I think the last time they were at the Monkey, The Brixton Guns were still the Brixton guns. I don’t think I was actually even employed by the Monkey House then…weird. Anyway, it should be a rockin’ good time. I believe at one point Alex Budney told me they were doing a Rush cover or two. God bless you Bad Suit.
Oh, and they have provided us with one of the most bad as posters to grace the windows of the Monkey in all my 12 months on the job.
Wait a minute, I’ve been at the Monkey for a year now….whoa.
Moving on.
Friday March 28th
21+ $5
9pm L. Dora
10pm Dan Harmon Trio
11pm APR Band
For those close to Burlington’s acoustic singer/songwriter scene, you may have seen one Andrew Parker-Renja performing at many of the venues in Burlington. I think he may have done his first local gig with the Grift at the Monkey last summer actually, but don’t quote me on that. Anyway, you might also have seen him billed around town as APR. He is a very talented singer and, yup, beat-boxer. APR has handed the duties of beat keeping to a drummer and thus formed a band. It should be cool.
Also, if you have any interest, APR does the booking for Parima’s Thursday night acoustic Lounge. He’ll most likely have some info on those nights at the show on Friday. He’s an approachable guy, so feel free to plug him for some info.
Dan Harmon has also been along for our acoustic Tuesdays, and since his first appearance has put together a small trio to fill out his songs. They have played once before, but without the full drum kit. It is always interesting to see what happens when a songwriter puts his or her work in a full band setting.
Also, L. Dora will be opening up the show.
Saturday March 29th
Tick Tick Presents: Stereo Warmup; a dance party
9pm J Boom
10pm Baby Bantum
11pm David Goliath
12pm Mike Device
So, we’re having these dance parties every month, and for real, they will be on Saturdays from now on. They are fun, and there is the chance to purchase a wicked dance mix for $3. Pretty sweet deal, if’n your askin’.
Sunday March 30th
$6/$8 DOS (18-20yo +$4 at the door)
9pm Greg Davis
10pm Paper Cuts
11pm Beach House
This show is going to be a treat. There has been lots of press for Beach House in the online world, and they have created a bit of a buzz around town. We’ve already sold nearly 70 tickets, so its going to be a packed show. I’ve listened to their new album Devotion, and its like existing deep below the surface of luke warm water with neon trinkets floating just out of reach.
No, I haven’t listened to Papercuts. I’m saving the surprise for the night of the show. Sometimes its a nice thing to do.
I’ve only seen Greg Davis perform on one occasion. It was before a great line up at Metronome including Megafaun (whom Greg will be performing with at the Monkey on May 2nd), and Akron Family, and actually, Bob Log III might have been involved as well. Anyway, it was a treat, and I look forward to having him at the Monkey.
Have a look see….
Ok, everyone. Spring is on the way. One day soon it will just pop, and that will be a good day.
Take care.
Paddy

So, the big game came and went. Thus ends my first full calendar year where I somehow became oddly addicted to sportscenter and now have MLB.com sending updates to my inbox. How’d it happen?

I’m thinking about the next show I’m really excited for. Ameican Hornets. Listenig to the spacey folk songs on theirspace they can either sound like washed out noise collage or gracelandy pop songs. My two favs are the chirpy, “I Just Wanna Fuck” and the books-esque “Hello 1st Snow.” But that’s just me. Check ‘em out and come to the show. Tick Tick are bringing them to our stage this Sunday (2-10) There’s probably a cover but as always, the door goes to paying the musicians, not us.

Two Wednesday from now (2-13) marks the next show for the “Songwriter Series” brought to you by Paddy and Co. This time with St. Mike’s songstress Maryse Smith. Check her out on herspace. Then come to the show. It’ll be awesome.

Does everybody else hate the dentist like I do? ugh. - Tyson

Get Awesome.

My name is Tyson.  Hi.  You may remember me from such memories when I served you a beer.  I think it’s time that we at the Monkey try and use this “internet” and try to stay in touch with a community that’s supported our lovely establishment over the past year.  (Yeah, we are officially just over 1 year old now.)  Thank you everybody who has made this year so great, we appreciate.

So, I guess the reason to keep a blog going is to let you know what each of us is particularly excited about and why you should be excited as well.   And be excited you will!

First, the Songwriters Series featuring Cannon Fodder.  Almost each and every Wednesday night, the ‘unofficial, official’  Monkey house band will be bringing an emperor’s new groove to their favorite singer songwriters.  Tomorrow they start with Seth Gallant.  According to Paddy, “Seth will Open.  Then Cannon Fodder will play.  Then they will play together, and it will be awesome.”  Straight from the horse’s mouth.

Friday and Saturday will bring a swarm of rock and/or roll from Bear Cub Productions.  Friday, the 25th, will feature ex-Vermont bizzaro-pop quartet, Pretty & Nice, Portland’s Cult Maze and ska-kids Husbands.  Cult Maze has been the talk of a few people so check ‘em out before you come.  Sing along.

Saturday is Paddy’s yearly birthday!  Wish him a pleasant one while locals Drive the Hour and Farm are joined by Brooklyn’s Slingshot Dakota.  You can’t not smile while watching Carly and Tom from Slingshot Dakota be cute and loud and smiley in return.  Lot’s of music to digest and all in our “little bar that could.”

End of Year Ramble

So,

I begin this Ramble with the intent of probably not finishing in one sitting, so if things seems disjointed, i apologize in adavance.  And also, since I’ve no idea how to add a poster-of-blogs, so I’ll be “blogging” as monkeyhousevt for now. Anywho….

I’ve been hanging and seeing music at the monkey house since before Ryan took over, and though I loved the space before hand, I’m proud to be part of the growth that has taken place in the last year.  It seems to me that, as an arch enemy of mine once said, “there is a lot of love going into this place.”  That was months before  he shouted at me for not being perfect…..

Anyway, the people that I’ve met, the variety of music that I’ve heard and the fact that I’m now writing for a blog are all due to the fact that I get to work at this great place and with these great people.  SO yeah, the MOnkey HOuse is awesome, for more ways that it is viewed by the public…which from what i hear on a weekly basis, is pretty awesome.

The music is developing so that we are able to provide quality music most nights of the week.  Even if you don’t happen to dig the style that we have on a particular night, we in the booking department (and i don’t mean just Ryan and myself, because we’ve had much help from the folks at Tick Tick, Bear Cub, and the infamous people at Hey! Hi! Hello!) have made contacts and enough of a reputation that better and better music fills the spots.  Equally as important, people are realizing that we’re making the effort, and its becoming more than just a bar with music…..its a musical bar!…..no, no…..its raising the bar for music!….man, that was lame.

Anyway, I’ve been looking at what we have coming our way for the next few months, and the shows are better and better.  What we can do to encourage other great music to come our way, is to continue to go out and see shows, and realize that the cover is paying the band, so what the fuck.  And also realize, Winooski is like that weird cousin thats really fucking cool but might have some weird personality traits and vice our two that you wouldn’t feel comfortable discussing with the rest of your family, or some sketchy friends, and might live further away than you care to travel on a cold winter night, but remember, the more you hang out in winooski, the more comfortable you’ll become with your weird cousin.  And the more comfortable he will become with you…and the less likely he will be to get back into the smack game.  And maybe you’ll get a little weirder too, which doesn’t sound so hot, but I think is a really great thing, ok? ok.

Well, I think thats it for me.

Take care and keep it weird.

Paddy
